First debate in race for Denver mayor: Candidates give opening statements

This is the first of three 9NEWS debates in the race for Denver Mayor, featuring the 13 candidates participating in Denver’s Fair Elections Fund.

Denver voters overwhelmingly approved public financing of elections in 2018.  This is the first year the Fair Elections Fund is in operation.  It offers a 9-to-1 match for candidates who agree to fundraising limits – and certain conditions – like participating in two debates.  The goal was to encourage political outsiders to run for office. 

Thirteen of the 17 mayoral candidates on the ballot are participating in the Fair Elections Fund. 

Four additional candidates are not receiving Fair Elections Fund matches: Renate Behrens, Al Gardner, Andy Rougeot, and Robert Treta. 

Information for some of tonight’s questions came from our partners at CLLARO’s Latino Action Council, a group of Latino community organizations in Colorado.  The questions were prepared by 9NEWS and were not been shared with anyone else in advance.
