I AM DENVER: Whittier Neighborhood

Whittier is one of Denver’s original neighborhoods, with homes popping up as early as the 1860s. Thought to be among Denver’s first suburbs, it was a thriving working class and middle class area of the city with a diverse population of residents, from Italian and German immigrant families to a thriving African American community.

Whittier is often associated with the Five Points area (link to Five Points piece) as the two have similar histories. Five Points was a combination of businesses and residences, whereas Whittier has primarily been a residential neighborhood.

Today Whittier remains one of Denver’s most diverse neighborhoods. Learn more about Whittier’s history by watching the video above.
