Ahead of Gary Shapiro’s retirement, he is looking back at some of the most memorable specials he did while at 9NEWS.

“To mark 75 years since the U.S. was attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, Photojournalist Manny Sotelo and I went to Hawaii for the ceremonies. We documented three Colorado Veterans who survived the attack and went back to remember and honor those who didn’t.
Each had a story to tell that was dramatic and heroic in different ways. We also featured the Windsor, Colorado High School Marching Band, selected to take part in the pomp and circumstance marking the 75 year remembrance activities.
One of the veterans we featured, Retired Lt. James Downing told us “everyone was a hero that day”. That became the title of our special.”
